Listed windmill & residential fire sprinklers

Project
Restoration of a former windmill, England

Fire risk analysis
A listed windmill that had remained empty and derelict for many years was granted planning permission to convert into a residential property. Due to the number of floors and the open plan style of the proposed dwelling; Building Control requested a residential sprinkler system to protect escape routes.

Solution
An analysis of the plans indicated that concealed sprinklers could be installed within the proposed scheme. As the study was made at an early stage of the development, it was possible to design the pipe work into the structure, so that there was virtually no visible pipe work. This satisfied the Listed Building requirements whereby and changes to the original structure had to be approved.

The existing local water main was not capable of supplying the sprinkler system, so a design was implemented that included a header tank and pump unit being installed in the roof space at the top of the property.
